Airport transport compared

Taxi vs Rental Car from Curaçao Airport

Taxis at Hato charge fixed fares set by the government. For a short stay a taxi can work fine. From about three days, or as soon as you want to see the west coast beaches, a rental car usually costs less.

Curaçao Airport taxi fares

Taxis wait right outside arrivals. You recognize them by the letters TX on the license plate. There are no meters: fares are fixed by destination zone and charged per car, for up to four passengers with luggage. A fifth passenger and more add a surcharge, and rides between 23:00 and 06:00 cost 25% more.

When a rental car costs less

Take a week in Jan Thiel as an example. Two taxi rides to and from the airport already cost around $120 to $130. A taxi round trip from Jan Thiel to a west coast beach such as Grote Knip or Cas Abao easily runs over $100 more, and you are tied to the pickup time you agreed.

With one or two beach trips, the car is already the cheaper option, and every dinner in Willemstad or supermarket run after that costs nothing extra.

When a taxi makes more sense

For everything else, from the beaches in the west to Christoffel National Park, you need your own transport. Public buses do not reach most beaches in a practical way.
