Taxi or rental car in Curaçao

Taxi or Rental Car in Curaçao? Prices, Rules and a Calculator

A week in Jan Thiel with three beach days costs about $1,090 in taxis and about $240 with a rental car. Even on a short city break a car usually costs less, because every dinner out means two taxi rides. Check your own trip with the calculator.

The short answer

On cost alone, a rental car wins almost every time. Two airport taxi rides to Willemstad already cost about $110, more than three days with an economy car from a local company. One return taxi from Willemstad to Cas Abao costs $180 or more, enough for six days.

Taxi fares in Curaçao in 2026

Taxis have no meter. The driver charges a fixed price per car for the destination, for up to four passengers with luggage. These are daytime fares in 2026:

RouteFare per car, one way
Airport to Piscadera (Marriott, Hilton)$35 to $50
Airport to Blue Bay$45 to $60
Airport to Otrobanda$40 to $65
Airport to Punda and Pietermaai$50 to $70

The low end is the zone list that many licensed drivers use and the price in apps such as Kumbai. The high end is what taxis at the stand and private transfer companies often ask. The calculator uses the middle. Curaçao has no published official fare list, so agree the fare before you get in.

Surcharges

How to pay

Most street taxis take cash only, in US dollars or Caribbean guilders. App taxis such as 24-7 Taxi Curaçao also take cards. Ask for the price per car, not per person.

Are taxi fares in Curaçao official?

Partly. The law allows the government to set maximum fares, but the current list is not published anywhere online. That is why every price list you find comes from drivers, apps or travel sites.

What this means for you: there is no official price to point to. Ask the fare before you get in, confirm that it is per car, and ask about the night surcharge if you land late.

How to recognize a legal taxi

Uber, ride apps and illegal taxis

Is there Uber in Curaçao?

No legal one. On 20 July 2026 the transport authority UOVV, part of the Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning, confirmed that paid rides through Uber are illegal. The same applies to rides offered through social media or other apps when the driver has no permit.

Ride apps: 24-7 Taxi, Kumbai and Click

24-7 Taxi Curaçao works with licensed taxi drivers. Kumbai shows fixed prices in advance and describes its drivers as vetted local drivers. Click Curaçao offers taxi trips and ride-sharing in its app, but its listing does not say whether the drivers hold a taxi permit. Whatever app you use, a paid ride is only legal with a permit, so check for the TX plate before you get in.

Grey taxis

Private drivers who take paying passengers without a permit are called grey taxis. Economist Rob van den Bergh and lawyer Jeff Sybesma estimated in 2025 that 100 to 150 of them drive around. They are cheaper, but illegal. A permit holder must insure passengers. A private driver without a permit does not have that obligation, so you may not be covered after an accident.

Tour buses and shuttles

Since July 2026 the UOVV gives temporary permits, valid for up to six months, to registered companies with tourist vehicles of ten seats or more. Book shuttles and transfers with a registered company and ask for a confirmation in writing.

The bus: cheapest, but limited

ABC buses connect the airport with Otrobanda and Punda for Cg 2 per person, about $1.10. The buses run roughly every 60 to 90 minutes during the day and do not reach most hotel areas or beaches. See the timetable in Curaçao Airport transfers.

Four example trips

TripTaxisRental car incl. fuel
City break: 3 nights in Willemstad, 2 people, 2 evenings out, no beach days$235$95
Classic week: 7 nights in Jan Thiel, 2 people, 3 beach days, 2 evenings out$1,090$240
Family: 10 nights at Mambo Beach, 4 people, 4 beach days, SUV$1,300$652
West coast: 7 nights in Westpunt, 2 people, 5 beach days, 2 evenings in town$900$238

Calculated with the calculator on this page: daytime fares in the middle of the 2026 range, an economy car at $30 a day (an SUV at $60 for the family) and one to four short local rides per trip. Your own fares can differ.

The car is cheaper in every example, even on the city break. In Willemstad you still need a taxi for most evenings out: Otrobanda to Pietermaai is a long walk across the bridge, and from the hotels outside the center walking is not an option. A taxi mainly wins on comfort: when you land late, want to drink at dinner or rarely leave your resort.
